Job Purpose

As a Senior Hydrologist you will deliver Environmental Hydraulics and Hydrology services to support the Capital Programme, Operational Engineering, Special Projects and Studies and Investigations programmes.

You will manage and deliver projects, conduct data gathering and analysis, design and prepare documents, drawings and specifications, and review proposals by others to provide expert advice.

Collaboration with other technical disciplines and internal clients will build strong relationships and enhance UU’s technical leadership profile.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Deliver projects and provide technical engineering advice, including data gathering, analysis, design, calculations and document preparation.
  • Maintain strong relationships with other disciplines and internal clients.
  • Deputise for a Senior Engineer, manage commission orders and develop UU’s engineering standards and procedures.
  • Raise the profile of UU Hydro Engineering through technical papers and STEM activities.
  • Ensure all activities comply with Health and Safety, Quality Management Systems and United Utilities standards.
Technical Skills & Experience
  • Accredited degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, Earth/Enviro Science, Natural Sciences, Geology, etc; working toward Chartership with a relevant professional body (CIWEM, ICE).
  • Experience with Flood Estimation Handbook techniques, Flood Modeller Pro, HEC‑RAS, ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Experience in flood capacity and freeboard assessments, wind‑wave overtopping calculations, and hydraulic assessments on reservoir spillways and draw‑down facilities.
  • Experience in hydraulic modelling of river systems, flood risk analysis and low‑flow studies.
  • Ability to provide technical advice, influence delivery of engineering outcomes on capital and strategic projects in highly technical and commercial environments.
  • Current UK/EU driving licence.
Essential Qualifications
  • Accredited degree in a relevant subject and working toward Chartered status.
