Who We Are

The Young Offenders Facility (YOF) provides direct supervision, care and custody of youth aged 12 to 17 at the time of offence under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The Youth in custody at YOF often have complex history or risk factors including substance use, mental health diagnosis, exposure to abusive/traumatic situations, challenging socioeconomic factors, gang affiliation, gender diversity and/or various cultural and spiritual backgrounds.

We Are Looking For

We are looking for Youth service workers who strive to establish a positive and professional relationship with youth in the context of therapeutic and trauma informed practices. This is achieved through a lens of cultural understanding, rehabilitative programming, positive leadership, reinforcing boundaries, while following operational policies and procedures. As a Youth Service Worker, you possess a genuine interest in working with youth to build resiliency, pro-social skills, and protective factors to reduce the risk of re-offending while ensuring the safety, security, and confidentiality of youth, staff, facility, and community.

Essential Qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the following qualifications. Please note selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Diploma in Social Sciences or Corrections, from a recognized institution
  • Experience working with youth at risk (12-17yrs)
  • Experience delivering various programs (recreational, educational, life skills, cultural) to youth
  • Experience working in a secure and open custody program

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above will be equally considered.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, And Suitability

Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

  • A genuine interest in working with at-risk youth.
  • Ability to monitor and operate specialized equipment such as visual monitors, cameras, touch screen control system, two-way radio, multiline phone system, and intercom.
  • Ability to respond to challenging and aggressive behaviour, using approved communication, de-escalation and intervention techniques.
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
Conditions of employment
  • RCMP Security Clearance with Vulnerable Sector
  • Valid Class 5 Yukon Driver's Licence
  • Current TB Screening
  • Current First Aid/CPR Level C (to be obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • Physical and Mechanical Restraints training course completion within 6 months of hire
Job Requirements
  • Shift work, including evenings and weekends.
  • Potential for mental health risks working with youth who may have a history of substance use, trauma, mental health diagnosis, unpredictable behaviours, etc.
  • Potential risk of blood or body fluid exposure when applying restraints, administering CPR, and/or first aid.
  • Physical demands include participation in recreational activities and sports, yard maintenance and snow removal, janitorial duties, walks, standing for extended periods, sitting, bending, stretching, lifting up to 50lbs, restraining youth up to 300lbs, and participation in year-round outdoor activities.
  • Exposure to toxic cleaning solutions, client medications, narcotics, and glycol.
  • Driving government vehicles.
