We are seeking an experienced prescribing pharmacist to become our new Surgical Admissions Pharmacist. The candidate will optimise elective surgical patients peri-operative pharmaceutical care and surgical inpatients.

You will be an integral member of the MDT, participating in ward rounds and functioning as a Clinical Pharmacist across the surgical specialties. By promoting safe, effective, cost-efficient and green agenda prescribing advice you will optimise outcomes and enhance continuity of care across primary and secondary services.

As the Surgical Admissions Pharmacist you will:

  • Work closely with the Principal Pharmacist for Surgery, to further develop and shape pharmacy services provided to the Surgical Division and Pharmacy department, across all Trust sites, for elective and non-elective surgical inpatients, day-case patients and outpatients.
  • Contribute and lead on quality improvement initiatives including clinical and departmental audits, research and involvement in risk management.
  • Mentor and supervise trainee and junior Pharmacists, Pharmacist Technicians and other Trust personnel as required, advancing their clinical and professional development.
  • Use your independent prescribing qualification to optimise medication regimens and manage complex drug therapies, particularly to elective patients in the peri-operative period.
  • Support the management of drug expenditure, identifying and implementing CIP s within the Surgical Division.
Main duties of the job

The post-holder will supervise, support, and develop other pharmacy staff, in particular junior pharmacists, pre-registration pharmacists, and other Trust personnel as required.

Applicants need to be able to work autonomously, be a team player whilst motivating others, and also provide cross-cover to other areas within the Surgical team on a reciprocal basis.

To develop and implement PGDs, evidence-based guidelines, policies and SOPs to support surgical pharmacotherapy. You will also be an integral part of the MDT by providing advice to others working within the division.

Oversee clinical pharmacy service provision for inpatients in association with Principal Pharmacist.

Working within professional boundaries to provide person-centred, evidence-based structured medication reviews for all medical patients; to ensure appropriate, cost-effective and safe provision of medicines.

Close working with the multidisciplinary team, which may include attendance at MDT meetings. Interacting with a wide variety of health/social care professionals including Specialist nurses, based in the hospital and pharmacy colleagues in community pharmacy, GP practices.

Participate in departmental and clinical audit.

Provision of expert advice, information and recommendations on medicines and prescribing.

Promote safe and effective use of medicines, minimise waste and reduce medicines related incidents/errors.
