At Naomi House & Jacks place we are embracing the changing world of palliative care for children and young adults and developing new ways of working, so we are looking for a variety of forward-thinking and motivated staff to join the team.

Main duties of the job

Working within our skilled Practice Education Team, you will maintain and further develop clinical training programmes for all care professionals in the Trust, in line with our agreed educational strategy. This will include supporting clinical theory and skills assessments, continued development of a robust clinical competency framework and assisting with the regular review of skill mix and care needs.

In addition, you will work directly within the clinical area, advising and supporting the development of competency and confidence. You will therefore need to be an excellent practitioner who is seen as a role model.

A qualified paediatric or dual registered nurse with proven experience in education or teaching, you must have up to date experience with a range of clinical skills including invasive and non-invasive respiratory support; IV and central line management; and experience of nursing care at end of life. Excellent interpersonal skills and good presentation skills are also important.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will deliver the Naomi House and Jacks place education and training programme to clinical staff to enable them to provide specialist palliative care and support for children and young people from 0-35 years. The post holder will also be expected to lead and manage the team during clinical shifts, providing a high standard of holistic care to children and young people with a variety of complex health needs.

Effective communication skills are required to support children, young people and their families during their stay in the hospices. The hospices provide care over a 24-hour period and the post holder is expected to work flexibly across all shifts.

Key Responsibilities

To positively support and influence clinical skills development for all care team staff to sustain quality care delivery

To support the development of the clinical competence of the Care Team in Naomi House, Naomi House at Home and Jacks place inline with agreed educational development strategies and priorities.

To lead the provision of a very high standard of care and support for all children, young people and their families attending Naomi House and Jacks place

To participate in the development and implementation of educational programmes to support the professional development of all care team staff

Leadership Responsibilities

To work primarily in the clinical area with the Care Team, role modelling, advising and supporting their development of competency and confidence.

Provide teaching of clinical skills to the care team and assess individuals competency using the clinical competency framework

To facilitate study days, workshops and hands on training to support clinical skills development for all care team staff.

To collaborate with Clinical Team Leaders to identify individual educational needs and assess staff competency and confidence.

To lead and coordinate the day-to-day provision of care to the children, young people and their families in both houses.

To allocate staff appropriately on each shift to ensure effective use of resources.

To be responsible for ensuring a holistic assessment is completed for all children and young people to enable up to date care plans incorporating all necessary risk assessments.

To provide accurate and complete data and maintain the training database as appropriate

To line manage staff as delegated by the Clinical Team Leader, participating in appraisals and day to day staff management.

Clinical Responsibilities

To deliver a high standard of individualized holistic care and support to children, young people and their families, promoting empowerment, advocacy and partnership.

To manage staffing and allocate resources across both hospices according to assessed acuity on each shift.

To contribute to the development of others enabling them to apply current knowledge and skills in practice.
