Overview
As a military member, weapons engineering technicians are responsible for performing corrective and preventive maintenance activities related to weapons systems, communications, radars, and maritime navigation aboard ships.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and assessing electronic equipment performance
  • Using electronic diagnostic systems, specialized tools, and testing equipment
  • Performing diagnostic analyses on components and systems to identify failures
  • Repairing faulty electronic equipment to restore systems
  • Inspecting, maintaining, and installing electronic components
  • Writing test records and evaluation reports, compiling maintenance documentation, and reading/interpreting electronic schematics

Work environment
Technicians mainly work onboard ships based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Esquimalt, British Columbia. They participate in unique adventures and face challenges specific to maritime work, often working in tight or exposed environments to repair and maintain equipment.

Regular shifts are typically day shifts onboard the assigned ship. In addition to routine tasks, subordinate weapons engineering technicians may perform other duties such as cleaning, painting, working in the cafeteria, or assisting with supplies.

Career options include regular force assignments, where you are posted to your first base after training, with potential relocations, or reserve force service, where you work part-time at a designated reserve unit, usually one evening a week and some weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.

Enlistment programs

  • Direct enlistment options

Foreign studies may be recognized. Benefits include full salary, medical and dental care, and paid leave. Candidates commit to serving in the CAF for a specified period.

  • Use of manual tools, electrical meters, and diagnostic equipment

Further specialized training may be pursued at approved colleges or through on-the-job courses in areas like sonar operations, high-reliability welding, explosive safety inspection, and fiber optics.
