Job Profile

The Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) is an advanced level of practice for Paramedics and is essential to the emergency medical response, pre‑hospital, and community‑based medical care operating models. Under the supervision as determined by the Department’s organizational structure and the medical directors' scope of work, the ACP is responsible for providing medical services to citizens of Winnipeg in accordance with established medical standards and protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Precept Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) students from accredited colleges.
  • Oversee clinical care on medical incidents when the ACP is the highest‑trained medical provider.
  • Report to:
    Station Officer (routing), Platoon Chief Paramedic Operations (HR, scheduling, operations), District Chief Paramedic Operations (medical standards, quality assurance).
  • Medical decision‑making and ensuring proper assessment and care for all patients.
  • Monitor and precept PCPs and PCP students.
  • Conduct ambulance inventory and safety checks.

As The Advanced Care Paramedic, You Will

  • Respond to emergent and non‑emergent situations and provide emergency medical care and transport to hospital.
  • Provide care in accordance with established medical standards and protocols and per the Medical Director’s scope of practice.
  • Participate in public education, injury prevention, and community relations activities.
  • Successfully complete all training programs required to maintain certification standards.
  • Carry out vehicle, equipment, and station cleaning procedures and maintain required inventories.

Your Education and Qualifications Include

  • Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Program Certificate (minimum) accredited by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) (prior to February 2018) or Accreditation Canada (after February 2018).
  • Heart and Stroke CPR Certification – Basic Life Support Level certified within the last year.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Certificate is an asset; provincial equivalents accepted.
  • Previous work experience as a Paramedic is an asset.
  • Knowledge of NOCP competencies for an ACP and related skills as identified by the Departmental Medical Director.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety, health standards, FIPPA, PHIA, and handling confidential information with discretion.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Patient‑care skills: empathetic, respectful, professional.
  • Organizational and prioritizing skills; ability to make critical decisions under stress.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and provide feedback to junior paramedics.
  • Resilience in difficult, stressful, chaotic situations.
