- Ensures smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of the research laboratory, sample processing, biobanking, and maintaining and updating human and animal data collection activities.
- Provides updates and progress reports to members of the SPORT research team and stakeholders.
- Assists in the recruitment, selection, training, and orientation of research staff in biosafety, chemical safety, and animal protocols.
- Supervises research assistants and technicians in human and animal sample processing, biobanking, and laboratory duties.
- Is responsible for onboarding, training, and surveillance of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students within laboratory procedures and experiments.
- Ensures deadlines are met and research protocol and regulatory requirements of the U of M and funding agencies are followed.
- Is responsible for data collection and analysis for research projects.
- Monitors the progress of research activities.
- Prepares periodic and ad hoc reports as required by investigators, administrators, and funding agencies.
- Contributes to and completes literature reviews, manuscript drafts, figure development, and PowerPoint presentations.
- Assists in the writing of grant proposals, including coordination of team-based applications, budget development, instrument quotations, literature searching, reference management, reviewing, and submission.
- Organizes investigator meetings, participates in weekly SPORT meetings and quarterly laboratory manager meetings.
- Meets regularly with PI to relay laboratory management strategies, discuss study progress, emergent issues, status, and quality of data collection.
- Is responsible for the management and continued cataloguing of bio inventories, including human clinical samples and samples from animal surgeries.
- Performs electro chemiluminescent immunoassays, tissue processing, RNA extractions, quantitative PCR, Western analysis, sample transport, data analysis, and validation.
- Is responsible for preparation for large animal surgeries, recording of hemodynamic and ventilator data, inflation fixation of porcine lung tissue, tissue processing for paraffin embedding, histological and immunological staining, bright field and confocal microscopy, and lung injury scoring.
- Performs other responsibilities as :
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline is required.
- Completion of a Bachelors degree in a health-related field is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Three years of directly-related experience is required.
- Previous experience analyzing clinical samples and assisting with animal surgeries is preferred.
- Experience performing nucleotide extractions (RNA & DNA), standard PCR, and Quantitative PCR is required.
- Experience with Meso Scale V-plex immunoassays, lung histology, light and confocal microscopy and lung anatomy required.
- Experience maintaining general lab equipment and performing general day-to-day lab maintenance is required.
- Capability to perform Western blotting and immunohistochemistry is required.
- An understanding of general cell culture and sterile technique is required.
- Experience with animal handling, breeding and in vivo experimentation; experience performing environmental exposures would be an asset.
- Experience in molecular biology and/or animal models is preferred.
- Familiarity with ordering lab supplies while adhering to and updating a budget is preferred.
- Experience with drafting research manuscripts and grant applications is an asset.
- Experience carrying research projects required.
- Supervision of student and research staff is required.
- Must be familiar with confidentiality and security issues related to human research.
- Must have experience with literature searches and retrieval.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Effective oral and written communication skills in English are required.
- Strong organizational skills, thoroughness, accuracy and attention to detail are required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software is required. (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)- Working knowledge of statistical analysis software is required (i.e. Excel, Graph Pad, R.)- Must have no allergies to animals or chemicals used in the lab.
- Must possess a philosophy compatible with animal-based research.
- Knowledge of WHMIS, biosafety and animal protocols and regulations, and certification for safe handling of related materials is required.
