Position OverviewUnder the supervision of the Manager Health Services, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct care to patients within the Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC). The HCA assists with activities of daily living (ADLs), supports independence and patient goal acquisition, and demonstrates commitment to the mission, vision and values of SMHC while adhering to standards of care, policies and procedures.
Experience- Experience providing care to individuals in a mental health setting, or with physical and cognitive impairments is preferred.
- Minimum Grade 10.
- Successful completion of a recognized Health Care Aide course is required.
- Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates effective command of the English language.
- Knowledge of PHIA, WHMIS, Principles of Routine Practices and other relevant Workplace Safety and Health requirements/responsibilities.
- Knowledge of Indigenous customs, traditions and values is preferred.
- Ability to prioritize care for an individual patient or group of patients.
- Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
- Ability to perform independently and as a member of the health‑care team.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations.
- Ability to recognize and pursue self‑development opportunities.
- Moderate to heavy physical effort required: standing, transferring, transporting patients/residents and equipment.
- Requires shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends or extended hours as needed.
- May encounter aggressive and/or agitated individuals.
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
