The role focuses on mechanical, structural and hydro‑mechanical system support, releasing engineering products for operational aircraft, involving troubleshooting and resolving complex in‑service issues, and providing hands‑on mentoring or technical guidance to RAF maintainers.
Position Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical, structural and hydro‑mechanical system problems on C-17 aircraft in an operational environment.
- Provide clear, practical repair guidance and technical recommendations to RAF maintainers and leadership.
- Interpret and apply technical documentation (drawings, engineering orders, maintenance manuals, system schematics) to ensure correct maintenance and repair actions.
- Deliver on‑the‑job training and demonstrations explaining system theory, maintenance procedures, servicing and troubleshooting techniques.
- Support airworthiness and mission readiness by identifying corrective actions, coordinating spares and support equipment, and recommending safe courses of action.
- Prepare and submit technical reports, publication change requests, continuous improvement data and product review documentation to record field activities and drive improvements.
- Collaborate with Boeing engineering, supply and customer teams, and provide similar support to other C-17 operators as needed.
- Travel to other operating locations to support maintenance, recovery and operational tasks when required.
- Engineering degree in a relevant discipline (BEng, BSc in Mechanical/Structural/Aerospace or equivalent).
- Eligible for UK SC security clearance.
- Demonstrable experience troubleshooting structural and integrated mechanical and hydro‑mechanical aircraft systems in an operational environment using technical orders, wiring/schematic diagrams, and historical repair data.
- Proven background in aircraft repair philosophy, airframe structures, and fluid/hydraulic systems.
- Familiarity with aircraft support equipment and common maintenance tooling.
- Ability to work under time pressure in a 24/7 operational environment; on‑call availability may be required.
- UK Secret security clearance required (UK residency required).
- Understanding of aircraft electrical, environmental, propulsion, mission and avionics systems as they interface with mechanical systems.
- Experience with materials review and product review processes (MRA, MRB, supplier MRB, DEA post‑production review).
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- Practical experience mentoring and training maintenance personnel.
- Prior C-17 or military transport aircraft experience is desirable.
