Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training Program:

This is a certificate-issuing course that prepares students for the state licensing exam (a requirement in Virginia to become a Certified Nursing Assistant). 

After you finish our 4 week nursing assistant program, you earn a Certificate of Completion from Astar.  Students can then schedule their state licensing exam if they wish to pursue the certified nursing assistant (CNA) path.

The 120-hour course is broken down into a combination of classroom theory hours, skills lab, and clinical practice hours. Topics / modules include:

• Safety & Infection Control
• Taking Vital Signs
• Personal Care Procedures
• Communication & Interpersonal Relationships
• Exercise & Activity
• Admission, Transfer & Discharge procedures
• Care to clients with special needs
• Dementia & Memory Care – Care to clients with cognitive impairment
• End of Life Care
• Nutritional Requirements & Techniques

A Nursing Aide (NA) assists individuals with daily healthcare needs - under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Job duties include oral care, dressing, feeding, hair care, bed-making, nail care, bathing, positioning, motion exercises, vital sign testing and more.


Personal Care Aide (PCA) Training Program:

PCA’s are essential in nursing homes, home health care companies, and hospitals and help with a range of duties, including:

• Food and nutrition
• Taking vital signs
• Accident prevention
• Personal care
• Rehabilitative services
• Respite care aide. 


Certified Medication Aide (CMA) Training Program:
Duration: 3 weeks

A Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is allowed to administer medications in assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers, drug clinics, group homes, shelters and penitentiaries.  

Job duties of a medication aide include:
• Preparing, administering and maintaining medications

• Assisting clients with self-administration of prescribed medications, asepsis, basic pharmacology and documentation

• Administer oral medications, ear drops, nasal drops, topical preparations, eye drops and ointments, transdermal patches, nebulizer treatments, soaks and sitz baths, oral hygiene products, inhalation therapy products and epi-pens

Adding a registered medication aide certification onto a current CNA license can increase hourly wages.

There is guaranteed job placement for all students who complete this course.

CPR Certification Training:
Duration: 3 - 5 hours

Medical English Program:
Course Duration: 2 weeks / 30 hours

Astar’s Medical English program is a sub-specialty for career-specific language acquisition for healthcare professionals, doctors, patient care technicians, medical assistants, nurses, caregivers for example.

This course will introduce students to the relevant English vocabulary, functional conversations, pronunciation and advanced listening skills needed for the medical/long term care-giver.
