International Summer School for Teens in Scotland, UK provides an exciting and insightful, 3-week journalism summer camp in 2024 for both local British and international students of ages 13-18, located in the medieval city of Stirling in Central Scotland (40 minutes north-west of the capital city Edinburgh, and 35 minutes north-east of Glasgow).

This academic summer journalism course must be combined with one of our creative or sporting elective courses (Golf, Tennis, Soccer Football, Sports Leadership, Introduction to Coding, Theatre (Drama / Acting techniques), Photography).

Summary of the Programme:

• Students also choose one sports or creative elective course from the following: Golf, Tennis, Soccer Football, Sports Leadership, Photography, Theatre / Drama / Acting techniques, or Introduction to Coding.

Our journalism class teaches students how to find their a professional voice and navigate their way through unprecedented political, technological, and environmental change. Through hands-on and engaging lessons, students learn that good journalism requires thorough investigative techniques, credible sources and the ability to provide balanced analysis.

We apply "critical thinking" techniques to all of our academic classes in order to enhance our students' learning. Critical thinking is a very important skill, not just for writing essays, but also for preparing for university/job interviews, as well as future life decisions.

The Journalism classes will cover:
• Practical communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Solid research and analytical skills
• Build confidence in presenting new ideas
• Cover different forms of media (blogging, news writing, interviewing, podcasting)
• Discuss journalism ethics and standards
• Explore "fake news"
• Look at topics such as sports vs lifestyle journalism
• To work with young people from varied cultural backgrounds with a range of different perspectives.

Our objectives & outcomes for this class are:
• Develop critical thinking, analytical and problem solving skills
• Determine the relevance of arguments and ideas.
• Recognise, build and appraise arguments.
• Approach problems in a consistent and systematic way.
• Reflect on the justification of our own assumptions, beliefs and values.
• Improve verbal, written communication and research skills.
• Interpret and apply complex information.
• Identify inconsistencies in reasoning.
• Start thinking about future academic and career options.
