What the TESOL Course Covers:
Our Trinity College London Cert. TESOL course is both intensive and practical.
Emphasis is made on hands-on teaching experience, alongside tutorials on modern English teaching techniques & methodology which can be put into practice in the classroom.
Teaching Methods, Language Awareness & Phonetics:
The theoretical part of the TEFL course, taught through a series of daily lectures and seminars. These modules are internally assessed and externally moderated.
Learning a New Foreign Language:
This part of the TEFL course introduces an unfamiliar language to trainees, as well as introducing a variety of teaching methodologies.
It is essential that our trainees gain an invaluable insight into the many difficulties of learning a foreign language from the learner’s viewpoint.
Trainees must complete a reflective journal which includes an analysis ESL classroom management techniques and methodologies.
Individual Student Profile:
Each TESOL trainee is assigned a foreign student of English to profile. The aim here, through an in-depth analysis, is to discover the various factors, such as cultural background and/or mother tongue language, which affect the learning situation in the EFL classroom.
This essential part is a microcosm of the whole Cert. TESOL course, and is again internally assessed & externally moderated.
Observed Teaching Practice:
Trainees progress from peer teaching practice to "real" teaching classes with foreign students. The English lesson preparation is discussed with your tutors beforehand.
St Brelade’s College tutors passively observe and assess your lessons, and then provide insightful feedback and teacher development support throughout the course.
You are also required to record your own self assessment of each of your teaching lessons.
Distance Learning Preparatory Pack:
Two components of the Cert. TESOL course which require extensive study are phonetics (the study of the sounds of human speech) and language awareness.
The St Brelade’s College distance learning pack includes some essential study guides that provide our trainees with the opportunity to master some of the theory on phonetics & language awareness before beginning the course.
This then allows trainees more time for concentrating on the teaching practice element the course.
As part of the course preparation, you receive a helpful set of study guides and worksheets to complete and return to our college, and must also write an essay of between 400-600 words based on your material studied.
