PURPOSE
Automation Technicians will be responsible for supporting our Project Managers and System Engineers with creating, installing, and commissioning PLC/HMI/SCADA based systems, as well as network and device integration work.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this job. These are not to be constructed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Complete start-up and commissioning of new PLC/HMI/SCADA control systems, service and maintenance of existing installations, fault diagnoses, hardware repairs, programming bug fixes, and alterations on customer sites
- Diagnose and resolve technical problems on job sites and provide reports to Project Management or Operations Leaders via email, SharePoint, One Drive, or other repositories
- Participate in project kickoff and turnover meetings with Project Managers to understand project scope and complete project documentation
- Organize control submittal project redlines and submit to design engineers for as-built drawing packages
- Collaborate with other technicians to develop and share technical solutions
- Engage in technician training to stay updated on new products, tools, and integrations through continuing education
Minimum Education & Experience
- Associate’s degree in Robotics, Automation, or Technology, or 3-5 years of experience with PLC/HMI control systems in lieu of degree
- Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Engineering, or Manufacturing is preferred
Required Competencies
- Knowledge of at least one PLC software (e.g., Rockwell Suite, Modicon Unity Pro, Control Expert, Mitsubishi)
- Knowledge of at least one HMI software (e.g., Rockwell Factory Talk View, Wonderware InTouch)
- Understanding of SCADA platforms (e.g., Ignition, Factory Talk View SE, GE iFix)
- Proficiency with Windows Office applications and repositories (e.g., One Drive, SharePoint, GIT)
- Optional:
Knowledge of Microsoft SQL or other database applications - Understanding of Ethernet and serial network communications
- Basic understanding of process controls (e.g., PID loops, motor control, digital/analog measurement devices)
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to travel to customer sites about 25% of the time
Environmental and Physical Requirements
- Prolonged sitting at a desk working on a computer
- Ability to lift 20 pounds occasionally
- Fieldwork involving standing, walking, climbing stairs, and exposure to varying weather conditions
