Applications are invited from suitably qualified General Dental Surgeons for the full or part-time post of Clinical Lecturer or Clinical Teaching Fellow in Primary Care Dentistry. Part-time posts will be timetabled to follow a regular weekly pattern of teaching clinics which includes Mondays and/or Thursdays.

These roles are ideal for skilled General Dental Practitioners who would like to expand their clinical portfolio by teaching and favourably influencing the education of the next generation of dentists whilst developing professional relationships with colleagues.

The post-holder will be expected to inspire learning and skills development in student clinics and the simulation laboratory to ensure students are equipped to deliver optimal patient care. They will be supported in their role by experienced academic, clinical and professional services support colleagues within the Institute, NHS Grampian and the wider University.

The post will be based at the Institute of Dentistry located within Aberdeen Dental Hospital. Upon appointment, the successful candidate will be employed by the University of Aberdeen and will also be awarded an honorary contract with NHS Grampian.

For appointment at Clinical Lecturer level, the post-holder will be an enthusiastic and experienced general dental practitioner who will have experience in delivering clinical teaching. They may have developed a specific interest in particular areas of dentistry and have retained skills across all aspects of general practice. The post-holder will be responsible to the Restorative Dentistry Theme Lead, accountable to the Institute Director for academic matters and NHS Clinical Lead for clinical matters.

The post-holder will be responsible for the delivery of teaching in Primary Dental Care, including Operative Dentistry, Periodontology, Endodontics, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics for the undergraduate BDS Dental Curriculum and some aspects of the DipHE Dental Technology curriculum as required. The opportunity to teach on dedicated Oral Surgery and Paediatric dental clinics exists for role-holders with sufficient experience and skills in these areas.

For the most part, this teaching will be delivered on integrated primary dental care clinics and the clinical skills facility. The post-holder will be knowledgeable in contemporary primary dental care and able to treatment plan effectively, with an ability to explain treatment rationales to students and patients with ease in an understandable manner with consideration of the students’ stage of development.

Teaching will involve face‑to‑face lectures, seminars, clinical, practical and online teaching and project supervision. The post-holder will have the clinical, educational and personal skills to be capable of leading an aspect of the BDS curriculum. Further aspects of the role include assisting with assessment, student support, teaching initiatives, pastoral support and teaching administration.

For appointment at Clinical Teaching Fellow level, the post holder will be an earnest clinician who is keen to advance the education of dental students. The post-holder will be responsible to the Restorative Dentistry Educational Theme Lead, accountable to the Institute director for academic matters and NHS Clinical Lead for clinical matters. The post-holder will support the delivery of the BDS curriculum, mainly through the provision of teaching and supervision on our student clinics, as well as support other areas of student teaching and learning as required.

The post-holder will have particular focus on delivery of teaching in Primary Care Dentistry within both clinical and clinical skills teaching areas. They will be knowledgeable in contemporary primary dental care and able to treatment plan effectively, with an ability to explain treatment rationales to students in an understandable manner with consideration of the students’ stage of development.
