Position Overview
Applications are invited for this full‑time position (10 Programmed Activities – 8 Direct Clinical Care + 2 Supporting Professional Activities), a replacement post of Consultant Immunologist based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Part‑time hours will be considered. The post is available as of 1st May 2026. The full‑time salary is currently £111,430 – £148,064 (pro rata if applicable), with the starting point on the salary scale dependent on relevant years of experience.
This is an exciting opportunity to join and to lead the current, well‑established team delivering NHS diagnostic laboratory and specialist immune deficiency/allergy patient care in the North East of Scotland.
In addition to the Consultant post, the service currently has 2.7 WTE nursing, 11.0 WTE laboratory scientific, 0.5 WTE GP Specialty Doctor and 1.0 WTE administrative staff. The laboratory component of the service provides a full repertoire of laboratory investigations linked to allergy, autoimmune, and immune deficiency disorders. The laboratory occupies a half floor of the multidisciplinary laboratory building at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The laboratory is accredited with the United Kingdom Accreditation Service to ISO
15189:2022 standards. Specialist primary immunodeficiency and allergy clinical services including outpatients and day case infusion/challenge/biologics activities are provided in a dedicated, standalone unit adjacent to the laboratory building. The service provides an immunoglobulin home therapy programme across the whole of the North of Scotland.
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary serves a population of approximately 500,000 in the Grampian region (Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire) and is located at the city’s Foresterhill site, together with the University of Aberdeen Medical School, the Aberdeen and North East Scotland Transfusion Centre, the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. Specialist services for patients with primary immunodeficiency are also supplied to territorial NHS Health Board areas in Highland region, the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland (with a combined population of approximately 300,000).

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from the date of interview.
CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) or Portfolio Pathway route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive Consultant post once CESR or Portfolio Pathway specialist registration is awarded. Those with an International Recognised Specialist Qualification approved by GMC should have a confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR or Portfolio Pathway Specialist Registration can be made to the GMC.
