The role: At SSEN Transmission, we are working on large‑scale terrestrial transmission infrastructure to support Scotland’s ambitions to meet Net Zero. The Development Consents and Environment Manager will work on iconic national infrastructure projects, directly facilitating the transmission of renewable energy. The role spans the development phase of the projects, focusing on optioneering, environmental impact assessment and achieving development consents (Town & Country Planning Act, Electricity Act and other environmental consents).

The role also helps ensure projects can transition smoothly from design into delivery on the ground.

You will

  • Lead and coordinate project optioneering and environmental studies, as part of multi‑disciplinary project teams, to ensure all environmental and consenting risks are understood and incorporated into the development and refinement of project designs.
  • Oversee and manage external consultants to deliver proportionate and robust Environmental Impact Assessments to support consent applications.

  • Support project delivery teams in preparing for site construction through discharge of planning conditions.

You have

  • Strong knowledge of the Scottish planning process, consenting regimes, and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation, with experience in the Scottish rural environment and ideally infrastructure projects.
  • Proven project management skills in overseeing consenting and environmental site compliance for major projects, including project definition and setup, external consultant management, cost management, project risk, quality assurance, and programme management.
  • A degree in Environmental or Planning related disciplines, ideally with a postgraduate qualification, and experience in a relevant industry (e.g., infrastructure, construction, environmental planning, statutory bodies, or consultancy). Membership with a relevant professional body is desirable.
  • Experience or knowledge of construction processes and the importance of environmental mitigation.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach, embracing challenges and opportunities within a changing environment.
