Consultant in Cardiology (General Cardiology with interest in Echocardiography and ACHD)

This is an exciting opportunity to apply for this full-time replacement Consultant Cardiologist post (General Cardiology, Echocardiography and ACHD) based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). The post-holder will be joining a team of eleven Cardiologists.

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Cardiology at ARI, Aberdeen. NHS Grampian serves a population of 620,000, including patients from NHS Orkney and NHS Shetland. The Department is part of the Acute Services Directorate, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, NHS Grampian. Hospitals within NHS Grampian comprise of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, Woodend Hospital, Roxburghe House and Dr Gray’s Hospital.

The Cardiology department runs a busy out‑patient department with General Cardiology and Chest Pain Clinics as well as regular specialist clinics in Complex Heart Failure/Devices, Arrhythmias, Valve Disease, Cardiomyopathies and Adult Congenital Heart Disease. There is also a monthly Familial Arrhythmia Clinic run in collaboration with our colleagues from Clinical Genetics. In addition, a number of peripheral general Cardiology clinics are held in community hospitals around Aberdeenshire and in Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin.

The Inpatient Cardiac department consists of a 10‑bed Coronary Care Unit and a 30‑bed In‑patient Cardiology ward, both contained within the Emergency Care Centre. There is also a 12‑bed day‑case ward close to the Cardiac Catheterisation labs.

The Echocardiography department performs around 12,000 Transthoracic Echocardiograms per year, as well as Transoesophageal, Contrast and Bubble Echo, 3D Echo and Stress Echocardiography (DSE and bike‑stress). We have Philips Epiq CVx Echocardiography platforms to support our advanced echo service and structural intervention service as well as GE echo platforms (E95, E90, S70) for Transthoracic Echocardiography and community Echocardiography. All advanced Cardiac Imaging modalities are readily available on the Foresterhill site, including Coronary CT, Cardiac MRI and PET, Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy (performing ~1,200 scans per year), MUGA and DPD scanning for Cardiac Amyloid.

We have a regular Echocardiography review meeting to discuss difficult or interesting cases.

Key Clinical Duties
  • Commitment to General Adult Cardiology Receiving (currently a 1:11 basis) including weekend ward rounds.
  • Three out‑patient clinics per week, including general Cardiology and Adult Congenital Heart Disease clinics (supported by a specialist nurse).
  • Provide a weekly Transoesophageal Echocardiography list and imaging expertise to the general MDT and TAVI MDT.
  • An interest in stress Echocardiography or Nuclear Medicine would also be welcomed.
Qualifications

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required (licence must be in place prior to starting in post).

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview.

Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP). Applicants not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post up to 12 months if no substantive Consultant appointment is made.

During locum employment an application to obtain a CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.
