We are seeking an experienced researcher to act as Deputy Director (Methodology) within the Centre for Healthcare Randomised Trials (CHaRT), a UKCRC-registered Clinical Trials Unit, based within the Aberdeen Centre for Evaluation (ACE).

CHaRT has an international reputation in the design and conduct of high quality randomised controlled trials that address important questions facing health services (in the UK and overseas). CHaRT provides all the key competencies required to deliver trials in the increasingly challenging scientific, legal and regulatory environment in which RCTs are conducted – and draws on the expertise of multiple disciplines from across ACE and beyond including statisticians, mixed methods researchers, clinicians, programmers, trial managers data coordinators, implementation scientists etc.

Whilst CHaRT supports a wide portfolio of trials, it primarily focuses on pragmatic trials of discrete non-drug technologies or complex interventions. The delivery of all these trials is underpinned and informed by methodological research and governed by strong quality assurance principles.

The postholder will provide senior methodological leadership across CHaRT’s portfolio of clinical trials and related research, shaping the design and development of high-quality, innovative and competitive studies. They will also support the CHaRT Director in providing strategic leadership for the trials unit. Working closely with clinicians, methodologists and external partners, they will play a leading role in securing external research income, growing the Unit’s portfolio, and strengthening CHaRT’s strategic position with both commercial and non-commercial funders.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 8 salary scale, (£59,966 - £67,468 per annum) negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Graeme Mac Lennan, Director (ACE and CHaRT)

Should you require a visa to undertake employment in the UK you will be required to fulfil the minimum points criteria to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship under the requirements of the Skilled Worker visa. At the time an offer of appointment is made, you will be asked to demonstrate that you fulfil the criteria in respect of qualification and competency in English.

For research and academic posts, we will consider eligibility under the Global Talent visa. Please do not hesitate to contact Grant Rae, HR Adviser () for further information.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 28 July 2026
