GENETIC COUNSELLOR

Full-Time /Fixed Term

We are seeking a Genetic Counsellor to join the North of Scotland Clinical Genetics Service based in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary .This Service serves a population of around 950,000, covering Grampian, the Highlands, Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles. It comprises a team of Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Family History Nurses, Genetic Research Nurses, Administrative, and Molecular and Cytogenetic staff.

The service has strongly established links with Child Health Services (including Community Child Health and Learning Disability Services), with Maternity Services at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, and with Acute Medical and Surgical Services for adults. There is also close collaboration with the University of Aberdeen Institute of Medical Sciences and Applied Health Sciences which are on the same site.

The successful candidate will join the existing team of Genetic Counsellors in Aberdeen. They will manage their own mixed case-load including a variety of general genetic conditions, cancer genetics, cardiac and pre-natal genetics and will work towards autonomous counsellor-led follow-up clinics for management of some inherited conditions. They will demonstrate excellent counselling skills and an understanding of the psychosocial impact of how genetic conditions affect patients and their families.

Participation in teaching and research is encouraged and there will be opportunity to network with colleagues in the other National Genetic Centres in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow at various forums and study days.

Applicants will be a Registered Genetic Counsellor or have completed an MSc in Genetic/Genomic Counselling or be a Registered Nurse with equivalent experience in Clinical Genetics (see details in attached person specification). Consideration may be given to appoint at entry/ trainee level under Annex 21 conditions. For this, the applicant should have, or be about to complete, an MSc in Genetic/Genomic Counselling or be an experienced nurse or midwife with current NMC registration and a first or masters level degree.

Academically accredited counselling skills training and completion of a science course in human genetics would be an advantage.
