Job Description

Wood is currently looking for a Principal Alarm Management Engineer to join our System Integration (SI) team within our Digital Consulting business supporting across our UK projects. There is a requirement for hybrid working with Tuesday and Wednesday based out of Aberdeen, Glasgow or Staines. Occasional travel to the client site is also expected as required. Applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.

The Role

The Principal Alarm Management Engineer is responsible for managing the full alarm system lifecycle—aligned with ISA‑18.2, EEMUA
191, and IEC
62682—including creating or reviewing the Alarm Philosophy and master alarm database, chairing rationalization workshops, designing and improving alarm systems to reduce nuisance alarms, and conducting regular compliance audits using Excel tools or bespoke software.

Responsibilities

The Key Objectives of this role include:

  • Management of Alarm System: in-depth understanding of alarm management lifecycle stages as per ISA 18.2, EEMUA
    191, and IEC 62682
    • Create or review Alarm Philosophy, Alarm System Requirements Specification, Alarm rationalisation workshop terms of reference, and master alarm database
    • Chair and facilitate alarm rationalisation workshops using bespoke software and alarm databases
    • Design and implement effective alarm systems that meet operational needs
    • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce nuisance alarms and enhance system performance
    • Conduct regular assessments and audits for compliance with standards
    • Provide training for personnel interacting with alarm systems
  • Functional Safety Management: primary contact for functional safety for project definition, development, and execution
  • Workshop Coordination: develop terms of reference and organise workshops (HAZOP, LOPA, CHAZOP, EHAZID, etc.)
  • Deliverables Management: create or review key functional safety documents, including Functional Safety Plan, Safety Requirement Specifications, SIS Impact Analysis, SIL calculations and related procedures
  • Assessment Coordination: oversee functional safety assessments, audits, security risk assessments and independent verification
  • Prior Use Demonstration: coordinate or conduct demonstrations
  • Cross-Disciplinary

    Collaboration:

    work with other teams to develop deliverables (P&IDs, cause & effect diagrams, alarm & trip schedules, instrument datasheets, SIS logic solver user requirement specifications)
  • Compliance Assurance: ensure alignment with project safety specifications and standards (IEC
