Overview
The Neonatal Transport service forms part of the Specialist Transport and Retrieval Service for Scotland, ScotSTAR. ScotSTAR incorporates the Scottish Neonatal Transport Service, the Scottish Paediatric Retrieval Service, the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) and the Air Ambulance Service. ScotSTAR is managed by the Scottish Ambulance Service and undertakes approximately 3,000 transfers per year. The majority of transfers are done using dedicated road ambulances with a small number being done by fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, provided by the Air Ambulance Service.
The teams are composed of experienced transport nurses, ANNP’s, nurse consultants, transport fellows, and consultant neonatologists. The neonatal service has incorporated technological advances in neonatal intensive care and has capability for the use of HFVO, NCPAP, high flow and inhaled nitric oxide, phototherapy and servo‑controlled systemic hypothermia during transfers.
The Neonatal Team is looking to expand its nursing workforce and is seeking highly motivated individuals to join them. The post is a band 6 Senior/Nurse and the holder will provide high‑quality care to neonates and their families. This vacancy offers Registered Nurses (adult/child branch) the opportunity to work in a unique setting within the East ScotSTAR team currently based at the Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Health in Edinburgh, on a permanent basis.
Responsibilities- Provide high‑quality nursing care to neonates and their families during transport.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary neonatal transport team for safe and effective transfers.
- Support and train junior staff in neonatal transport protocols and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to clinical and safety standards during all transport operations.
- Registered Nurse (adult or child branch).
- Extensive neonatal intensive care experience in a level 3 unit.
- Strong knowledge of neonatal pharmacology, respiratory support, and neonatal physiology.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
For working in the United Kingdom, a legal requirement exists for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigrations Service. Please note that The Scottish Ambulance Service is NOT licensed to issue certificates of sponsorship under current UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship to work with us.
Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a "regulated role," your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team.
