Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: Aberdeen City

We are seeking to appoint a full-time Technician (100% FTE, fixed term for up to 48 months) to join the Kang Laboratory within the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen. The post is funded by a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) research grant and will support internationally recognised research into human brain development, neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegeneration using human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), brain organoids and advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques.

Job Description

The successful candidate will become part of a multidisciplinary research environment working closely with postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and collaborators. The laboratory combines stem cell biology, advanced microscopy, transcriptomics and functional assays to understand mechanisms underlying human neurological disease.

The Technician will provide high quality technical support for the Kang Laboratory by maintaining cell culture facilities, supporting research experiments, ensuring efficient laboratory operation, maintaining equipment and consumable stocks, assisting with data collection, and training new laboratory members in safe laboratory practice.

Applicants should possess an HND/HNC, BSc or equivalent qualification in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or a related discipline, or have equivalent laboratory experience. Experience in mammalian cell culture, molecular and cellular biology techniques, or microscopy would be advantageous, although training will be provided where appropriate. The successful candidate should be highly organised, proactive and able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.

Excellent organisational, communication and record-keeping skills, together with a commitment to maintaining high standards of laboratory practice, are essential. An interest in stem cell biology, developmental neuroscience and advanced human in vitro models would be desirable.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 4 scale, £28,199 - £29,588 per annum, pro rata.

In accordance with the UKVI immigration rules, it is with regret that this role DOES NOT MEET THE SALARY REQUIREMENTS for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route. However, the successful candidate may be eligible to apply for a Global Talent Visa on the Endorsed Funder route.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 11 August 2026

The School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition embraces a diverse working environment and recognises the many benefits this can bring.
