About the Role

Fleet Trainer

Permanent position

Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria

Sitting within the Shipping Services arm of the HSSEQ team, the purpose of this role is to advise and provide support, ensuring legal, statutory, and procedural compliance for all Health, Safety, Security, Environmental and Quality aspects across the Shipping Services fleet, under the direction of the Marine Lead.

The primary aim of this role is to support our targets of zero harm and zero spills across the fleet through fostering a strong safety culture within the fleet. This may be achieved through promotion and training of relevant health and safety items, or operational activities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

To undertake a sailing voyage (where accommodation allows) aboard each vessel in the fleet. Each vessel should receive a visit at least once a year.

While onboard: watch, review and propose changes and improvements to the way operations are conducted and provide training to those onboard to enhance and refresh skills.

  • Conduct internal ISM, ISPS and TMSA audits covering the fleet, office and Manning Agency locations.
  • Partake in external company audits such as TMSA reviews, DOC and ISO audits.
  • Promote Life Saving Rules and marine safety compliance during vessel visits including the development of a strong on-board safety culture.
  • The development and updating of safety related training materials in collaboration with JF Group safety initiatives that can be used throughout the fleet, in particular, safety presentations used while onboard. Responsible for the implementation and monitoring of a fleetwide Virtual learning Environment.
  • Assist in the maintenance and operation of the QMS system, reviewing, updating, and putting to work of manuals and procedures used throughout the fleet, with a particular emphasis on health, safety, security & environment.
  • Manage and quality assure marine related operational projects outside the scope of business as usual.

As a trained investigator, investigate incidents as required, following incident investigation methodology and produce reports and findings to be presented internally and externally.

Who are we looking for?

The role requires a willingness to spend time aboard company vessels whilst on passage.

In addition, the role requires self-initiative and motivation to ensure that tasks and projects are progressed and seen through to implementation.

You will be required to undertake frequent travel therefore a flexible approach to working is needed.

Using excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build good working relationships with the sea‑staff onboard.

Key skills, knowledge and experience
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant Maritime and HSEQ legislation such as ISM, ISPS, SOLAS and ISO standards.
  • A maritime background is necessary – Time spent working onboard commercial vessels preferable
  • An ability to use training aides and deliver training to a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office applications; preferred experience with AMOS.
  • Experience in incident investigation
