Grays Harbor CD Marine Resiliency Technician

Position Description

The Marine Resiliency Technician is a grant-funded, regular, full-time, hourly employee serving the Grays Harbor Conservation District (GHCD). This position is responsible to the District Board of Supervisors and is managed by the Marine Resiliency Program Manager (PM).
The Marine Resiliency Technician works with the PM to implement the District’s European Green Crab Program in Grays Harbor. The position will mainly involve active work in the field (75%), administering control efforts and performing prospecting, assessments, and site scouting for EGC trapping sites, and equipment/boat maintenance. This work will include working in potentially hazardous sites, in inclement weather, both on land and on watercraft.

Other duties will include data collection and management, coordinating with partners, and outreach (25%). Other duties as assigned by the PM.

The Marine Resiliency Program Technician’s duties are to assist the PM with the following:

General Operations – European green crab (EGC)

• With guidance from the PM, coordinate with WDFW, DNR, oyster growers, and private landowners to locate priority trapping locations in Grays Harbor Bay.
• Learn how to operate a boat (if the technician does not already know how), and obtain the necessary certifications (Boater Safety Card – required. MOCC Training preferred. First Aid/CPR – recommended).
• Trap EGC by land and by boat year round (weather permitting). Trapping strategies include control, prospecting, assessment, and monitoring
• Engage in site scouting as needed by boat and by land, while communicating with appropriate parties/stakeholders.
• Clean and maintain EGC gear and equipment (weekly and after every trapping).
• Follow all AIS Unit decontamination protocols for watercrafts, gear, and equipment.
• Coordinate EGC disposal.
• Prepare bait, supplies, and equipment for each trapping
• Notify PM when bait for traps is running low, as well as if any other supplies are needed for trapping efforts. May be asked to pick up bait and gear orders.
• Provide assistance with data management.
• Record data using electronic field app and/or field datasheets and ensure data is accurately recorded and summarized.
• Properly handle, identify, and record a variety of aquatic vertebrates and crustaceans.
• Attend and engage in EGC conferences as the budget allows.
• Help the PM with the Washington Sea Grant Sentinel Site in Aberdeen 1x/month, April-September.

Starting at $21 per hour
2 month probationary period.
