Position Overview
Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Fixed Term until 31 st August 2026. Term time 32.5 hours per week. Abertillery Learning Community – Secondary Campus. Salary: NJC Grade 6 (£33,142 - £37,280 pro rata). Required to start ASAP.
About the roleWe are seeking to appoint a committed and skilled Higher Level Teaching Assistant to work closely with the ALNCo and the CNRB Lead to develop the planning, coordination and monitoring of support for pupils with Additional Learning Needs in the Upper School. Our ideal candidate will have enthusiasm, excellent communication skills and great attention to detail. They will have a passion for lifelong learning and be strong role models for learners and staff.
A commitment to professional learning and flexibility in approach to the role will be essential as we continue on our improvement journey.
Provide high‑quality support for pupils with Additional Learning Needs. Work closely with ALNCo and CNRB Lead in planning, coordination and monitoring of support. Act as a role model for learners and staff, and support continuous professional development.
Required Skills- Effective use of ICT to support learning.
- Ability to organise, lead and motivate a team.
- Ability to relate well to children and adults.
- Commitment to improving own practice through self‑evaluation and learning from others.
- Strong understanding of Additional Learning Needs (ALN), including relevant systems, processes and documentation used to support learners effectively.
- Understanding of statutory frameworks relating to teaching in a 3–16 learning environment.
- Experience of working with children of relevant age in a learning environment.
- Working knowledge and experience of implementing Curriculum for Wales and other relevant learning programmes/strategies.
- Good understanding of child development and learning processes.
- Full working knowledge of relevant policies, codes of practice and legislation.
- Ability to work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities.
- Meet HLTA standards or hold an equivalent qualification with relevant experience, or be eligible to meet HLTA standards and able to demonstrate relevant experience.
- Training in relevant learning strategies (e.g., literacy, numeracy).
- Prior consideration will be given to those currently meeting HLTA standards.
