Role Description

The Community Life and Student Safeguarding Advisor plays a key role in the development and delivery of a newly formed Student Support and Community Life service. Working closely with the Community Life and Student Safeguarding Lead, the postholder will be the primary point of contact for students and their supporters on all forms of anti‑social behaviour, harassment, and harm within our community.

The role champions inclusive, positive residence and campus culture, maintains a caseload of students dealing with community concerns, flatmate disputes, and sexual misconduct, and further develops the ‘Report and Support’ system. The postholder will also join our team of Sexual Violence Liaison Officers (SVLOs) and receive regular training to support this vital work.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Community Life and Safeguarding Lead in responding to incidents and reports, liaising with stakeholders and services.
  • Manage a caseload of student concerns, incidents and queries, ensuring active and supported referrals to appropriate services.
  • Develop and deliver community life and safeguarding campaigns to deter and prevent issues while encouraging engagement.
  • Monitor the ‘Report and Support’ system, assessing risk and need and responding appropriately.
  • Support survivors of sexual violence or misconduct disclosed via the online reporting system.
  • Analyse disclosures and trends with colleagues, providing guidance and recommendations for service development.
  • Develop policies, processes and activities designed to prevent harassment and violence in the community.
  • Assess and manage risks regarding personal safety and reputational risk, collaborating with relevant colleagues.
  • Support the student journey through key events such as Welcome Weekend, Open Days, Visiting Days, Graduation, and projects.
  • Develop feedback and impact models to incorporate stakeholder experiences into future initiatives.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by the line manager.
  • Engage in university‑level projects and initiatives as directed.
  • Provide support to colleagues during high‑demand periods, including key university events.

Essential Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills
  • Degree level education or relevant professional experience.
  • Experience of safeguarding practice and/or supporting people in relation to harm, harassment, etc., ideally within an educational setting.
  • Evidence of working as part of a multidisciplinary team, responding to issues effectively in partnership.
  • Empathy for the needs of young people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and ability to gain students’ respect even when undertaking disciplinary action.
  • Self‑starter with the ability to manage own time and deadlines, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Team player, able to build positive, cooperative relationships with colleagues and complementary services.
  • People‑and‑service ethic, suited to a customer‑focused service, recognising education and learning at the core of the University’s purpose.
  • Clear communicator – verbal and written, able to negotiate and lead with stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, innovative and problem‑solving skills, especially in safeguarding, planning and decision‑making.
  • Able to identify and operate within appropriate personal and professional boundaries.
  • Self‑confident, able to earn the respect of students and colleagues, gently educate groups and build positive relations.
