Position Overview

As a key leader within the central design team, you will provide guidance, resolve technical issues, and help ensure the timely delivery of high‑quality plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E). Your role will involve strong communication, collaboration, and consistency to maintain a productive work environment, uphold project standards, and keep schedules on track. If you have experience performing and reviewing design work and supporting coworkers through complex submittals, this position offers the chance to directly contribute to project success and team growth.

Essential Duties Transportation Engineer I
  • Assist Project Managers with resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement.
  • Help establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines.
  • Support design, computer operations, and plan preparation.
  • Develop design and project development reports, surveys, and correspondence.
  • Coordinate preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, Administration, FHWA, contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers, and local entities.
  • Develop and/or review engineering documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans.
  • Travel to project/work locations for on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, and technical support.
  • Interpret maintenance standards, rules, methods, and traffic operations guidelines.
  • Lead and train professional and administrative staff.
  • Make presentations and represent TxDOT.
  • May serve as a lead worker for related tasks.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for Transportation Engineer II
  • Act in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory, and engineering aspects.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring budgets.
  • Develop design and project development reports, surveys, and correspondence.
  • Perform complex engineering design work (layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, contracts).
  • Perform complex planning work (plan review, calculations, transportation planning studies).
  • Train engineering staff.
  • Update, review, and monitor requests for changes to plans, manuals, and standard sheets.
  • Apply project management principles for complex transportation projects.
Additional Duties for Transportation Engineer III
  • Assess and report actual vs. planned project progress to determine trends and variances.
  • Assist Project Managers with realistic and achievable schedule baselines for complex projects.
  • Perform advanced and complex engineering design work (layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, contracts).
  • Perform advanced and complex planning work (plan review, calculations, transportation planning studies).
  • Conduct complex hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of structures over waterways and summarize findings.
Minimum Qualifications Transportation Engineer I
  • 4 years of engineering or transportation engineering experience (full‑time or proration applies).
  • Graduate‑level education may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • No supervisory experience required.
Transportation Engineer II
  • 5 years of engineering or transportation engineering experience.
  • Graduate‑level education may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
