General DescriptionUnder direction of the Division Manager – City Marshal, to perform a variety of duties involved in performing law enforcement‑related functions in facility security, transports, and arrests.
Supervision ExercisedThis position exercises no supervision.
Important And Essential Duties- Execute all lawful service, including arrest warrants, subpoenas, and mental health commitments.
- Safely transport all prisoners, inmates, and mental health clients.
- Exercise authority in preventing or defusing potentially violent situations involving court personnel, the mentally ill, and others.
- Communicate with Abilene Police Department personnel, Taylor County Jail personnel, Legal Department staff, attorneys, and other court staff members, to obtain and disburse information necessary to court operations, transports, and arrests.
- Enter, retrieve, and interpret all types of data.
- Operate a City vehicle daily to various locations.
- Perform fundamental tasks associated with service or process including telephone calls to defendants and others, verifying identifying information, addresses and other identifying documents, etc.
- Attend all court sessions to assist the judge, record document dispositions, maintain order, and direct defendants, jurors, and witnesses. To include, legibly hand writing log entries, forms, etc. and transporting documents, cash, or persons to and from the court office, jail, and the Taylor County Law Enforcement Center, or other facilities throughout the state.
Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Law enforcement methods, practices, and pertinent laws.
- Office practices, methods, and computer equipment.
- English language including spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Maintain order and safety in various situations.
- Operate office and police equipment, including computer equipment.
- Safely use and care for firearms.
- Cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for others.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Maintain records and files; assemble and organize data and prepare logs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Safely and effectively transport detainees or mental health clients.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

- Perform as a team member in a manner that accomplishes the Division’s mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior law enforcement experience is preferred.
- Some knowledge of security and court operations is preferred.
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- The completion of the approved Texas Basic Peace Officer Academy is required.
- A Texas Basic Peace Officer License is required.
- A valid Texas Driver’s License is required.
- Safely and effectively maintain custody or transport detainees or mental health clients to various locations and facilities.
- Must be available for on‑call duty in order to respond to operational needs and/or to respond to emergencies or immediate transport, to include travel throughout the state of Texas.
- Ability to run, stoop, bend, kneel, and twist.
- ___ Sedentary – lifting of no more than 10 pounds
- ___ Light – lifting no more than 20 pounds; carrying up to 10 pounds
- _X__ Medium – lifting no more than 50 pounds; carrying up to 25 pounds
- ___ Heavy – lifting no more than 100 pounds; carrying up to 50 pounds
- ___ Very Heavy – team lifting over 100 pounds; carrying more than 50 pounds
