This position may be eligible for a recruitment bonus of up to $5,000 for a selected candidate who is currently not employed by The Texas Department of Transportation. We offer company-sponsored Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training with $0 upfront monetary commitment. Earn your full salary while training with lodging, transportation and per-diem provided if necessary.

Responsibilities- Perform repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop.
- Repair and maintenance of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges; inspect work performed by contracted vendors.
- Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors.
- Work may be performed independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Equipment Mechanic I, II & III
- Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
- Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
- Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into fleet information management system.
- Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
- Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; move items related to these activities as required.
- Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
- Prepare vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios.
- Troubleshoot, test and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
- Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Mechanic II - Responsibilities in addition to those listed above
- Train less experienced technicians.
Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
Equipment Mechanic III - Responsibilities in addition to those listed above
- Lead and train less experienced technicians.
- Perform duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Experience:
Equipment Mechanic I - 2 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair
Equipment Mechanic II - 4 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair
Equipment Mechanic III - 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of course registration. You will have 2 attempts to pass the written and driving exams.

Equipment Mechanic I:
- Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
- Proficient skill in mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
- Proficient skill diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
- Proficient skill in using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics
- Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair
- Proficient skill in troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
