Principal Electrical Safety Engineer

The salary for this role is £71,815 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected five days a week, with flexibility available upon request. The role is based at Culham, Oxfordshire and requires completion of BPSS and DBS checks.

Responsibilities

The Electrical Safety Group leads electrical safety management and engineering across UKAEA, ensuring compliance with legislation and supporting continuous improvement. The Principal Electrical Safety Engineer serves as a senior subject matter expert in electrical, machinery, and functional safety, providing technical authority and consultancy to projects, programmes and the Office of the Chief Engineer.

Duties include:

  • Contributing to the authoring of electrical safety strategies, policies and standards.
  • Supporting the Lead SAP(E) in delivery and monitoring of the UKAEA electrical safety management plan and organisational standards.
  • Leading the delivery of electrical safety continuous improvement plans and proactively implementing improvements.
  • Developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, supporting consultancy services and forecasting work.
  • Referencing management when consultancy work highlights significant risk to UKAEA operations.
  • Conducting incident investigations, determining root cause, developing corrective actions and providing technical authority for electrical safety and related engineering aspects.
Salary

£71,815 inclusive of Specialist Allowance, with pension benefits.

Qualifications
  • Honours degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent experience and knowledge.
  • Significant, demonstrable experience with industrial electrical power systems.
  • Extensive experience of safety and maintenance processes in high—hazard environments (permit to work, risk assessments, safety cases), preferably with responsibility for major plant assets.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Relevant safety qualification or certification (IOSH, NEBOSH).
  • Machinery or process safety qualification or certification (CMSE, FSCP).
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards registration.
