Quality Engineer
Location:
Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Salary:
Up to £55,000 per annum
Job Type: Permanent, Full-time
We are recruiting an experienced Quality Engineer to join a well-established precision engineering business in Abingdon. This position will provide quality engineering support across the operation, with a particular focus on manufacturing quality control, inspection, compliance and continuous improvement.
The role will suit a hands-on Quality Engineer with a strong precision engineering background who is confident interpreting complex engineering drawings, selecting appropriate measurement techniques and working directly with customers, suppliers and manufacturing teams.
Key responsibilities
* Liaise with customers and suppliers regarding quality issues and technical requirements.
* Support manufacturing teams, identifying and reporting quality shortfalls.
* Interpret complex mechanical engineering drawings and determine appropriate inspection methods.
* Produce accurate inspection reports and customer documentation packs.
* Manage non-conformances and customer complaints using 8D, 5 Whys and other root-cause analysis techniques.
* Create Quality Control Plans and customer-specific quality documentation.
* Train operators in inspection techniques, equipment and quality procedures.
* Prepare inspection equipment work instructions and inspection report templates.
* Support the management and calibration of measurement and test equipment.
* Compile final inspection trend analysis and quality reports.
* Conduct internal system and process audits in line with the audit schedule.
* Complete supplier audits and provide clear reports and recommendations.
* Recommend improvements to inspection processes, quality techniques and equipment.
* Ensure final inspections are completed within agreed timescales.
Skills and experience required
* A minimum of five years’ recent experience as a Quality Engineer or within a closely related quality function.
* Experience with in precision engineering, machining or a mechanical manufacturing environment.
* Strong knowledge of inspection techniques and measurement equipment.
* Ability to interpret complex mechanical engineering drawings.
* Experience producing inspection reports and customer quality documentation.
* Knowledge of non-conformance management and structured problem-solving methods.
* Strong customer and supplier liaison skills.
* Ability to train manufacturing employees in quality and inspection processes.
* Good project management and communication skills.
* Competent using Microsoft Office.
Desirable experience
* CMM programming experience.
* PC-DMIS programming capability, ideally PC-DMIS Level 2.
* Experience operating Hexagon CMM equipment with tactile and laser measuring heads.
* Formal CMM programming certification.
* ISO 9000 Auditor qualification.
* Experience conducting supplier and internal process audits.
