Toxicology Laboratory Analyst

This position is offered as a fixed term contract until January 2027 in the first instance, with the possibility of becoming permanant.

Receipt of samples into the laboratory. Sample preparation and extraction. Analysis of samples by GCQQQ, GCFID and LCQQQ, including instrument set-up. Processing/checking of analytical data.

Reporting to Toxicology Laboratory Team Leader

• Work to high standards, following detailed SOPs to prepare and analyse samples, within set timescale
• Receive, check and log samples into LIMS systems
• Update sample tracking systems and process documentation to allow accurate monitoring and rapid progression of casework
• Prepare samples for analysis, including describing, dispensing and sample clean‑up by protein precipitation, liquid‑liquid and solid phase extraction (SPE) techniques
• Operate and maintain scientific instrumentation
• Process/check instrument data (GCQQQ, GCFID and LCQQQ)
• Prepare laboratory solutions, calibrators and quality control samples
• Work under close supervision of Laboratory Team Leaders, ensuring that quality, accuracy and safety standards are maintained

• Higher/further qualification in a scientific subject (ideally chemistry based) preferred, or proven track record of forensic toxicology laboratory work experience

• Previous laboratory experience working with similar techniques

• Understanding of principles of extraction techniques (protein precipitation, liquid‑liquid extraction and SPE techniques)
• Understanding of principles of GCQQQ, GCFID, LCQQQ
• Knowledge of mass spectral data analysis programmes such as Analyst, Chem Station, Mass Hunter or similar
• Experience with Microsoft Excel / Word in order to carry out data input
• Understanding of Quality systems

• Ability to lift weights (up to approximately 5 kilograms).

• Laboratory work
• Data analysis/input at a computer workstation in a laboratory or office environment
• Use of personal protective equipment, when working in the laboratory
• Occasional requirement for early starts/late working/weekend working, as dictated by the workload
