SummaryResponsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients critically ill infants and children requiring advanced life support and intensive monitoring. You lead the assessment, stabilization, and ongoing management of complex medical and surgical cases in the PICU.
Education / Qualification- Qualification Source from:
North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.- USA:
American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) - Canada:
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC) - UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register
- Australia and New Zealand:
Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP)
- USA:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience post‑board / equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT), Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden or Switzerland.
- Sub‑Specialties – Minimum of two (2) years of experience post‑sub‑specialty certification in the above countries.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR), Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
- Sub‑Specialties – Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub‑specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
- Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
- Current BLS/ACLS Certificate
- Provide senior clinical leadership in the Pediatric Critical Care Unit, managing critically ill neonates, infants, and children.
- Perform rapid assessment, stabilization, and ongoing management of life‑threatening medical and surgical conditions.
- Lead daily PICU ward rounds; review, reassess, and update care plans for all admitted patients.
- Manage advanced organ support, including mechanical ventilation, non‑invasive ventilation, vasoactive infusions, and renal replacement therapy.
- Perform and supervise invasive procedures such as intubation, central and arterial line insertion, chest drains, and procedural sedation.
- Interpret laboratory results, imaging, and bedside investigations; adjust treatment plans promptly.
- Accept referrals from emergency, wards, NICU, operating rooms, and external hospitals; determine admission, transfer, or escalation of care.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary care with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, and allied health teams.
- Communicate clearly with families regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment plans, and goals of care.
- Lead end‑of‑life discussions and provide compassionate support to families when required.
- Supervise and oversee the clinical work of residents, fellows, and junior doctors.
- Provide bedside teaching, mentoring, and formal education to PICU trainees and staff.
- Participate in on‑call rotas and provide consultant‑level coverage for emergencies.
- Contribute to development and implementation of PICU clinical protocols and guidelines.
