SummaryThe Consultant Physician is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence-based care; effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under the post holder’s care. The consultant physician is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.
Education / Qualification- Qualification source from North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRCPC – Surgical Critical Care) - UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST Specialist Register Surgical Critical Care
- Australia and New Zealand:
Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP – Surgical Critical Care)
- Minimum 6 years current practice in the area of specialty after obtaining any of the above qualifications in USA, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand
- Current and in good standing medical license to practice in the country of residence.
- Supports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures
- Helps lead and implement the organization’s performance management system, including peer review, productivity and utilization review processes
- Participates in the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes
- Assists with scheduling and supports the Division Chief in ensuring adequate medical coverage within the Division at all times
- Attends divisional meetings as required
- Assists the Division Chief in recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate
- Assumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief
Diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the post holder’s specialty. The consultant physician’s clinical duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Oversees the clinical activities of junior medical staff and assumes responsibility for the care they provide
- Complies with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices
- Practises appropriate utilisation of the organization’s resources
- Leads ward rounds; reassesses both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis, in line with established best practice
- Accurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures
- Regularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as required
- Liaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required
- Actively participates in multidisciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients
- Ensures preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent
- Accepts clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients and patients referred from other hospitals
- Participates in and ensures the provision of out-of-hours (on-call) coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required
