Responsibilities
  • Assist students with personal, family, educational, mental health, or career problems, advocating for them and working with other individuals and organisations to promote their academic and social development.
  • Help students evaluate their abilities, interests, talents and personalities to develop realistic academic and career goals using interviews, counselling sessions and aptitude assessment tests.
  • Provide psychological support and deliver therapeutic and supportive interventions to help students manage social and emotional challenges at the individual, small group and whole‑school level.
  • Help students enhance personal, social and academic growth and wellbeing.
  • Monitor the progress of individual students and maintain records of their development.
  • Communicate with parents to discuss student behaviour or support needs.
  • Take steps to prevent bullying and support victims, including providing conflict resolution training.
  • Help students develop job‑search skills, such as resume writing and interview techniques.
  • Deliver therapeutic intervention based on individual needs and provide referrals to external services when appropriate.
  • Emphasise preventive and developmental counselling to equip students with life skills before problems worsen.

Note:

Duties will fall within the professional qualifications and expertise of the counsellor, depending on whether the post requires Guidance Counsellor and/or Mental Health Counsellor provision.

Career Counseling
  • Work with students regarding career options and provide appropriate information.
  • Assist students with career exploration and selection to help them make suitable academic course choices.
  • Maintain a library/database of career information for student use.
  • Coordinate access to university affairs and support university applications.
Personal Mental Health Counselling
  • Work with individual students and groups on social, emotional and developmental issues.
  • Be culturally sensitive, recognising the influence of culture on social development of adolescents.
  • Monitor students at risk of social or emotional problems and refer for external interventions as needed.
  • Promote wellbeing through whole‑school and community initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with the pastoral team and safeguarding leads.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science/Education in Social Work
  • Bachelor of Counselling
  • Bachelor of Psychology with subsequent postgraduate counselling qualifications
Minimum Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in school counselling or similar counselling experience
Job‑Specific Knowledge & Skills
  • Appropriate licence to conduct student counselling
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students and parents
  • Demonstrable organisational skills
  • Passion for helping others and ability to inspire respect, trust and confidence
  • High emotional and physical energy to handle a wide range of problems
  • Maintains confidentiality and professionalism at all times
