Responsibilities
Develop and implement departmental policies aligned with the school's vision, high achievement standards and effective teaching and learning. Establish, monitor and evaluate short-, medium- and long-term departmental development plans. Use data to identify underachieving students and implement targeted support strategies. Analyse school data, research and inspection findings to inform teaching practices, expectations and improvement targets. Ensure schemes of work are relevant, regularly reviewed and inclusive of SEN, G and T, and EAL provision across all year groups.
Teaching and learning:
Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity and progression for all students including high achievers and those with special educational needs. Establish clear policies for assessment, recording and reporting of student achievement. Set and maintain high expectations for teaching quality, student achievement and behaviour. Monitor and evaluate teaching and learning to identify strengths and areas for improvement and implement actions accordingly. Ensure regular departmental contribution to the school's CAS programme and after‑school booster revision sessions for I GCSE and IB DP students.
Leading and managing staff:
Performance manage team in accordance with school performance management policy. Establish clear expectations and constructive working relationships with the team ensuring collaboration, support, accountability and high professional standards. Hold regular department meetings with minutes and agendas focusing on improving standards relating to student achievement and teaching and learning.
Managing resources:
Efficient and effective deployment and control of staff, resources and budgets. Effective use of accommodation to create an effective and stimulating environment for teaching and learning in accordance with Learning Environment Policy. Ensure a safe working and learning environment in which risks are properly assessed and Health and Safety policy and regulations are observed at all times.
Other duties and responsibilities:
Contribute to the school's CAS Programme by leading and supporting one after‑school activity each term. CAS includes I GCSE and IB DP Revision Booster Sessions. Serve as Academic Mentor and Extended Essay Supervisor to Year 12/13 students. Cover for absent colleagues and invigilate examinations as required, including a minimum of one evening and one weekend external examination session to support the Examinations Officer and Summer Examination Schedule.
Any other duties as assigned by the Principal.
- Bachelor's degree in Education or other relevant field with a teaching qualification.
- Minimum of 6 years' experience in teaching specialist subject up to GCSE and A Level desirable but not essential.
- Previous experience working with students whose English is not their first language.
- A high level of professionalism and consideration of the well‑being of children.
- Respect for all members of a school community, irrespective of position, gender, age and ethnic background.
- A clean enhanced Disclosure and Barring Services check or police check.
