Role Overview

The Guidance Counselor supports students in their personal, academic and career development by providing tailored guidance, facilitating post‑secondary transitions, and coordinating school‑wide guidance activities.

Responsibilities
  • Support students in their personal, academic and career development, providing guidance on university choices, career pathways and skills for future success.
  • Track and assess student progress, offering tailored support to help them achieve academic goals and career aspirations.
  • Facilitate a smooth post‑secondary transition by assisting students with university applications, career planning and preparation for life beyond school.
  • Undertake school duties and extracurricular activities as expected.
  • Participate in ongoing continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Implement the school’s guidance policy and program, ensuring students receive appropriate guidance regarding post‑secondary education and career aspirations.
  • Partner with students from Cycle2 onwards to plan and align student portfolios, including subject choices and extracurricular activities.
  • Help students identify suitable local and international post‑secondary options, ensuring submission of at least one application.
  • Engage parents throughout the guidance process, emphasizing student agency in decision‑making.
  • Provide full administrative support for post‑secondary applications, including writing recommendation letters and reviewing personal statements.
  • Develop relationships with local post‑secondary institutions to facilitate admissions visits and internship opportunities.
  • Stay updated through continuous professional development and share new insights with colleagues.
  • Offer tailored guidance to gifted, talented, and students with additional learning needs, supporting scholarships and mentorship opportunities.
  • Organize guidance events, maintaining a calendar of key dates relevant to students.
  • Foster alumni relationships and track alumni pathways.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a QFE Level7 (Bachelor’s Degree) in any subject, meeting CPD requirements as per the policy; or a QFE Level7 with experience as a former or current teacher/educator.
  • At least 2 years of experience in school counselling or other counselling experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students and parents.
  • Demonstrable organisational skills.
  • Strong desire to help others, inspiring respect, trust, and confidence.
  • High emotional and physical energy to manage a diverse array of student needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at the highest levels.
