Job PurposeThe Laboratory Engineer supports research and prototyping activities using advanced additive manufacturing technologies including both metal and polymer 3D printing system and reverse engineering technologies. The role involves managing 3D printing systems, operating 3D scanners, supporting design-to-prototype workflows, training users, and ensuring efficient and safe operation of the laboratory facilities.
Strategic Responsibilities- Support the development and enhancement of the Additive Manufacturing and Reverse Engineering laboratory capabilities in line with university research and academic priorities.
- Contribute to the adoption of new additive manufacturing and 3D scanning technologies to improve academic projects and prototyping capabilities.
- Assist in identifying opportunities to expand laboratory services and improve operational efficiency.
- Operate and maintain advanced 3D printing systems (DLMS, FDM, SLA, DLP, SLS).
- Prepare and optimize models using slicing software (Cura, Prusa Slicer, Simplify3D).
- Competency in operating post‑processing equipment, including sand blasting systems, vacuum furnaces, heat treatment furnaces and surface finishing equipment.
- Experience in operating quality inspection equipment including CT scanning systems, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), optical 3D scanners, and surface roughness measurement instruments for dimensional and structural evaluation of additively manufactured parts.
- Conduct 3D scanning for reverse engineering and digital modelling.
- Process scan data using Geo Magic Design X and mesh editing tools.
- Support Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) and provide CAD assistance (Solid Works, Creo, Fusion 360)
- Troubleshoot printing issues and ensure production quality.
- Oversee daily operations and activities of the Lab.
- Coordinate prototyping requests and monitor equipment performance.
- Maintain logs, SOPs, and optimize printing parameters.
- Enforce safety procedures for resin, powder, and laser-based equipment.
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure EHS compliance.
- Train users in safe laboratory practices.
- Manage inventory, booking systems, and user access.
- Assist in procuring and evaluating new 3D printing and scanning equipment.
- Maintain up-to-date records of lab resources and services.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipline
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
