Position: Lead Electrical Engineer – Power System Studies (ETAP) & 132kV GIS

Lead Electrical Engineer – Abu Dhabi, UAE. Reports to Head of Discipline - Electrical.

Job Overview

The Lead Electrical Engineer leads electrical engineering design, review, and analysis activities for transmission, distribution, and industrial projects. The role requires extensive experience in power system studies using ETAP software and the design and engineering of 132kV GIS substations. You will provide technical leadership, support multidisciplinary project teams, and ensure successful project delivery in safety, quality, budget, and schedule across all project phases, including FEED and detailed engineering.

Specific Experience

Minimum 15+ years of electrical engineering experience in power, utilities, transmission, and distribution projects, with proven expertise in ETAP studies and 132kV GIS substations. Experience with in an engineering consultancy and multidisciplinary environment is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Power System Studies

    • Lead and perform comprehensive power system studies using ETAP, including:

    • Load Flow Analysis

    • Short Circuit Studies

    • Protection Coordination Studies

    • Arc Flash Hazard Analysis

    • Motor Starting Studies

    • Harmonic Analysis

    • Transient Stability Studies

  • Review study results and provide recommendations for system optimization and reliability improvements.

  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for clients and project stakeholders.

  • Substation Engineering (132kV GIS)

    • Lead engineering design and review activities for 132kV GIS substations.

    • Develop and review:

      • Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)

      • Protection and Control Schematics

      • Interlocking Logic Diagrams

      • Equipment Layouts and General Arrangements

      • Cable Schedules and Termination Drawings

    • Coordinate with GIS equipment manufacturers and vendors.

    • Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, energization, and handover activities.

Project Leadership
  • Manage and supervise electrical engineering teams throughout project execution.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering interfaces with civil, mechanical, protection, and SCADA, ECMS/SCMS teams.

  • Ensure engineering deliverables are completed on schedule and within budget.

  • Participate in technical meetings with clients, consultants, and contractors.

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.

Compliance & Quality
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards and regulations, including:

    • IEC Standards

    • IEEE Standards

    • Utility Requirements

    • Local Grid Codes

  • Support HAZOP, design reviews, and technical risk assessments.

  • Maintain quality assurance and engineering best practices throughout project execution.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Master's Degree in Power Systems Engineering (preferred).

  • Minimum 15 years of electrical engineering experience in power transmission and distribution projects.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a lead engineering role.

  • Familiar with ADNOC Group Specifications.

Required Experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience with ETAP software and power system studies.

  • Proven experience in 132kV GIS substations
    , including design, engineering, testing, and commissioning.

  • Strong understanding of:

    • Protection Relays and Coordination

    • Power Transformers

    • HV Switchgear

    • ECMS, SCMS and Automation Systems

    • Grid Interconnection Requirements

  • Experience with utility, EPC, or consulting engineering projects.

  • Familiarity with major OEM equipment such as Siemens, Hitachi Energy, GE Grid Solutions, Schneider Electric, or ABB is desirable.

Technical Skills
  • ETAP (Advanced User)

  • AutoCAD

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Protection Study Software (advantage)

  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 communication protocols

  • Electrical design and calculation software
