AboutThe Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) in CNC automation with deep expertise in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS), particularly with DS Technology – Taiwan solutions. This role is responsible for leading the design, integration, optimization, and lifecycle support of advanced CNC automation systems, enabling lights-out manufacturing, high-mix low-volume (HMLV) production, and data-driven operations. The ideal candidate will combine strong CNC process knowledge, automation system design, and digital manufacturing expertise to deliver scalable and efficient production systems aligned with business objectives.
Key ResponsibilitiesTypes of Machines & Machining Process
- Strong experience with CNC machines including 3/4/5-axis machining centers, HMCs, VMCs, mill-turns, and turning centers. Deep understanding of milling, turning, drilling, and 5-axis strategies with focus on process standardization for FMS environments.
- Experience in deburring, tapping, EDM, wirecut, cylindrical grinding process.
- In-depth knowledge of machining behavior for materials such as titanium, Inconel, steels, and aluminum alloys.
- Ability to optimize cutting parameters, tool selection, and tool life strategies for stable unattended machining.
- Strong proficiency in reading drawings and notes, GD&T standards (ASME Y14.5 / ISO) and interpretation of complex engineering drawings.
- Ability to align datum strategies, machining sequences, and inspection methods to meet tight tolerance requirements.
- Experience in designing and standardizing zero-point and modular fixturing systems for HMLV production.
- Ability to ensure repeatability by aligning fixture datums with machining and probing strategies across Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) setups.
- Lead end-to-end design of DS Technology-based FMS solutions (linear, multi-level, gantry systems). Define system architecture including:
- Machine configuration
- Pallet count and layout
- Material flow and buffer strategy
- Conduct feasibility studies, cycle time analysis, and throughput optimization.
- Integrate CNC machines from OEMs such as Doosan, Victor Taichung, Hwacheon, Mazak, Fanuc.
- Ensure seamless communication between CNC controllers (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain) and FMS.
- Oversee DNC, NC program management, and tool offset integration.
- Hands-on experience with probing systems like Renishaw or Hexagon for part setup, inspection, and tool measurement.
- Ability to implement closed-loop machining with automatic offset correction and integrate probing data into MMS/MES for lights-out operation.
- Configure and optimize MMS for:
- Production scheduling and prioritization
- Tool life and resource management
- Job queue optimization and real-time monitoring
- Integrate MMS with ERP/MES systems for end-to-end digital workflow.
- Design and integrate pallet handling systems, storage systems, and AGVs/RGVs.
- Evaluate and implement robotic solutions (KUKA, Fanuc, ABB) where applicable.
- Ensure optimal material flow and minimal manual intervention.
- Develop robust machining processes for unattended operations.
- Standardize fixtures (zero-point clamping systems).
- Define tool strategies for long-duration machining cycles.
- Improve process capability (Cp, Cpk) and reliability.
- Lead system commissioning, FAT/SAT, and ramp-up activities.
- Troubleshoot system-level issues across CNC, automation, and software layers.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives post-deployment.
- Work closely with customers, internal teams, and vendors to define requirements.
- Provide technical leadership during proposals, design reviews, and implementation.
- Support ROI analysis, business case development, and capacity planning.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, or related engineering field.
- 12+ years of experience in CNC machining and industrial automation.
- Proven experience with Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) or pallet-based automation.
- Strong understanding of CNC operations, tooling, fixturing, and machining processes.
