Mechanical Design Engineer; m​/f​/d

We are seeking a highly practical and hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives on turning concepts into manufacturable products. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of engineering design, prototyping, and production, transforming ideas, sketches, and specifications into high-quality engineering solutions.

You will work closely with our research and engineering leadership team to develop innovative mechanical products and components, taking projects from initial concept through detailed design, prototyping, and manufacturing.

• Translate whiteboard discussions, sketches, and written specifications into robust mechanical designs.
• Collaborate closely with researchers and technical leaders to develop concepts into production-ready engineering solutions.
• Create detailed engineering drawings, models, and supporting technical documentation.
• Develop practical, manufacturable designs that balance performance, cost, and production efficiency.
• Work directly with manufacturing partners, machine shops, and production facilities to ensure successful fabrication of components and assemblies.
• Support prototype development using 3D printing and other rapid manufacturing techniques.
• Assemble, test, and refine prototypes and mechanical systems as required.
• Contribute ideas and engineering improvements throughout the product development process.
• Participate in design reviews and provide technical input on manufacturability, materials, and production methods.

• Strong practical experience in mechanical design, drafting, or mechanical engineering.
• Advanced proficiency in Solid Works. Experience with other CAD platforms will be considered, particularly if you can transition quickly to Solid Works.
• Ability to convert conceptual discussions and requirements into detailed engineering designs.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, including machining, moulding, and additive manufacturing.
• Experience designing components in metals and plastics.
• Familiarity with prototyping techniques, particularly 3D printing.
• Basic FEA experience and/or ability to perform engineering hand calculations to support design decisions.
• Ability to work effectively with external manufacturers, fabricators, and machine shops.
• Hands‑on workshop experience, including the use of engineering hand tools and machine tools for prototype assembly and modification.
• Strong problem‑solving abilities and a practical engineering mindset.

• Knowledge of ceramics, moulding technologies, or advanced manufacturing processes.
• Experience designing moving mechanical assemblies, sealing systems, and pressure‑containing components.
• Experience working with products operating at pressures up to 125 bar.
• Exposure to structural frame design and mechanical support structures.
• Sheet metal design experience is beneficial but not essential.
