To develop, through structured training, mentoring and practical experience, the technical knowledge and professional competence required to become a Marine & Dynamic Positioning (DP) Technical Surveyor. The role is intended for a graduate with an engineering or relevant technical degree who wishes to develop a career in marine consultancy, marine assurance and Dynamic Positioning. Working initially under the supervision of experienced marine surveyors and consultants, the successful candidate will gain experience in vessel inspections, marine engineering, DP systems, DP trials, FMEA, marine assurance, Marine Warranty Survey (MWS), offshore marine operations and technical reporting.
The position will involve attendance onboard vessels, at shipyards and marine facilities where and offshore installations. Regular travel within the Middle East and internationally will be required, often at short notice.
The trainee will receive appropriate training, mentoring and supervision to progressively undertake the following tasks:
- Develop an understanding of vessel machinery, propulsion, steering, electrical, automation and auxiliary systems.
- Review vessel drawings, specifications, certificates, technical documentation and Safety Management Systems.
- Develop an understanding of statutory, flag State and Classification Society requirements applicable to vessels and marine operations.
- Develop a detailed understanding of the principles, philosophy, redundancy requirements and limitations of Dynamic Positioning systems.
- Gain familiarity with DP power generation and distribution, propulsion and thruster systems, control systems, position reference systems, sensors and associated auxiliary systems.
- Attend and assist with DP Annual Trials and DP FMEA Proving Trials under the supervision of suitably experienced personnel.
- Learn to assist with the preparation and review of DP trial programmes, recording of test results and preparation of associated technical reports.
- Develop an understanding of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Worst Case Failure (WCF) and Worst-Case Failure Design Intent (WCFDI).
- Develop an understanding of the role, responsibilities and authority of a Marine Warranty Surveyor (MWS).
- Attend and assist with offshore and marine operations including vessel mobilisations, towage, rig moves, anchor handling, offshore installation activities, loadouts, transportation, lifting operations and sea trials, as applicable.
- Develop the ability to review and understand marine procedures, method statements, risk assessments and supporting engineering documentation.
- Develop the ability to prepare clear, concise and technically accurate marine survey and consultancy reports.
- Maintain accurate project records, timesheets and expenses and complete assigned work within agreed project timescales.
- Progressively undertake greater responsibility and more independent technical work as the level of competence and experience is demonstrated.
Skills required:
- Bachelors degree or equivalent recognised qualification in an appropriate engineering or technical discipline, preferably:
- Marine Engineering;
- Naval Architecture;
- Mechanical Engineering;
- Electrical or Electronic Engineering;
- Aeronautics;
- Mechatronics;
- Control and Automation Engineering; or
- another relevant engineering discipline.
