Position: Sub-Saharan Africa Economist

الوصف الوظيفي Overview

We are partnering with a leading global macro hedge fund to appoint a Sub‑Saharan Africa Economist to join its global research team.

This is an opportunity to join a highly collaborative investment team with a deep, long‑standing interest in African markets. The firm places real emphasis on rigorous debate, shared insight, and intellectual curiosity, and has a genuine passion for understanding the economic, political, and structural dynamics shaping Sub‑Saharan Africa.

The role is focused on delivering high‑quality macroeconomic, political, and policy analysis across the region, supporting the firm’s emerging markets research and investment process through thoughtful, well‑grounded regional insight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver in-depth macroeconomic, political, and structural analysis across Sub‑Saharan Africa to inform regional emerging markets views.
  • Produce forward‑looking forecasts for key economic indicators, including inflation, growth, fiscal metrics, and external balances, using quantitative frameworks and cycle analysis.
  • Evaluate monetary policy regimes and central bank behaviour, forming views on policy direction and risks across countries of coverage.
  • Identify and analyse cross‑country linkages and external factors affecting the region, including global liquidity conditions and commodity market dynamics.
  • Articulate research findings to portfolio managers, contributing to thematic views and market‑relevant insights.
  • Lead country‑level deep dives and present regional macro themes in global research and investment forums.
  • Work collaboratively with research and investment colleagues across geographies.
Candidate Profile
  • Advanced academic training in macroeconomics, supported by strong quantitative and analytical capabilities.
  • 4–6 years’ experience in macroeconomic or country research focused on African markets, within a leading investment bank, asset manager, hedge fund, or international institution (IMF, central bank, or finance ministry).
  • Hands‑on experience with macroeconomic and statistical tools such as EViews, STATA, SPSS, and advanced Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to distil complex analysis into concise, investment‑relevant conclusions.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity, resilience, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑expectation environment.
  • Fluency in English required; additional language skills are advantageous.
