JOB DESCRIPTION

To have a responsibility in conjunction with the medical staff for supporting the optometry service and delivering both independent and shared care for ophthalmic conditions, particularly acute eye conditions. Examine patient’s eyes, test their sight, give advice on visual problems, prescribe, and fit spectacles when needed. Trained to recognize diseases of the eye, such as glaucoma and cataract, as well as systemic health conditions like diabetes.

• Responsible for taking all preliminary case history including medical ocular history and postoperative surgeries and current medications.
• Perform initial assessment, including unaided visual acuity, best‑corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and visual acuity with glasses (VA (C)) using a Snellen chart.
• Perform objective and subjective refraction as required with auto‑refractometers, retinoscopes, phoropter, lensometer, and trial lens set.
• Operate specialised equipment such as OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, specular microscope, corneal topography, digital retinal fundus camera, biometry with IOL Master 700, and Heidelberg OCT retinal imaging to detect eye pathology.
• Fit and dispense hard/soft contact lenses.
• Perform cycloplegic refraction of infants and children and provide follow‑up as required.
• Perform special diagnostic tests to determine ocular muscle deficiency.
• Examine patient’s eye using slit lamp (lids, cornea, anterior/posterior chamber and lens).
• Check intra‑ocular pressure (IOP) with application contact and non‑contact tonometers.
• With doctor’s consent, prescribe medical glasses, contact lenses, and advise patients on proper usage and maintenance.
• Advise patients on how to use their vision effectively and efficiently.
• Participate in the organization’s quality improvement and safety activities.
• Comply with established SSMC OSHMS procedures that have been communicated, instructed, and trained.

• Adhere to dress code; appearance should be neat and clean.
• Complete annual education requirements.
• Maintain and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
• Report to work on time and as scheduled.
• Wear identification while on duty.
• Maintain a positive working relationship with all staff.
• Actively participate with line management in implementing OSHMS requirements.
• Report to the line manager any potentially hazardous, unsafe act or condition that may impact occupational safety and health (OSH). Report all OSH hazards, near‑misses, and incidents.
• Maintain the strictest confidence regarding patient information whether formally or informally recorded.
• Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with patients, families, and other medical personnel to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders, and communicate status.
• Participate in department programs, committees, various hospital committees, and staff meetings when requested.
• Participate in the orientation and training of new employees.
• Maintain professional knowledge by attending lectures, seminars or online education units.
• Complete and maintain all regulatory requirements including licensure, certification, and other mandatory training within established time frames.

• Required:
  
  NLT 2 years postgraduate experience in the field in a hospital setting.
• Required (MSc):
  NLT 1 year of postgraduate experience in a relevant setting.

• Required:
  
  BSc in Optometry, or an equivalent qualification with a study duration of at least 3 years.
• Required:
  
  Current National Professional Registration.
• Desired: MSc. Degree in a related field.
