AboutThe Role
Apply, fabricate, and inspect thermal insulation systems across solid rocket motor ensuring full coverage, bond integrity, and dimensional conformance in accordance with approved process instructions and quality standards.
Responsibilities- Apply rubber and elastomeric thermal insulation lay‑ups to motor cases, end closures, and nozzles following approved ply sequences, coverage maps, and thickness requirements.
- Prepare component surfaces for insulation bonding: clean, abrade, mask, and apply primer and adhesive systems to metal, composite, and previously insulated substrates in accordance with process specifications.
- Cut, shape, and profile insulation stock using templates and patterns; form butt joints, scarfs, and overlaps to specification, eliminating voids, air pockets, and ply gaps throughout the lay‑up.
- Operate curing equipment including ovens, autoclave, press‑cure tooling, and vacuum bagging systems; execute approved cure cycles, monitor temperature and pressure parameters, and maintain accurate cure records.
- Perform post‑cure inspection of all insulation applications: conduct tap testing across bonded surfaces, measure cured thickness using calibrated gauges, and verify coverage completeness against inspection criteria; document all results on the manufacturing traveller.
- Fabricate rubber seals, end‑cap inserts, gaskets, and bespoke insulation profiles to drawing requirements; assist in the trial fit and installation of pre‑formed insulation parts into motor hardware.
- Control the receipt, storage, and issue of uncured rubber and insulation materials in compliance with shelf‑life limits, temperature storage requirements, and hazardous materials handling procedures.
- Maintain the insulation work area, lay‑up tooling, mandrels, and templates to a high standard of cleanliness, organisation, and readiness; report tooling damage or equipment faults to the supervisor without delay.
- Comply with all HSE requirements for chemical handling environments including PPE for solvent and adhesive exposure, ventilation controls, and confined‑space entry protocols where applicable; report hazards and near‑misses immediately.
- Support continuous improvement by communicating lay‑up difficulties, recurring bond defects, material inconsistencies, or tooling shortcomings to the supervisor or process engineer.
- 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment. No prior insulation experience is required — full structured on‑the‑job training in thermal insulation lay‑up, bonding, and curing processes will be provided.
- Secondary school certificate or vocational qualification in manufacturing, materials processing, or a related trade.
- Prior exposure to rubber processing, composite lay‑up, adhesive bonding, or insulation work in aerospace, automotive, or industrial manufacturing.
