Job Purpose
The Staff Nurse is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The Staff Nurse supports professional nursing practice across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The Staff Nurse will understand, support and promote the mission, vision and values of SSMC; provide age‑appropriate patient care according to the Nursing Scope of Practice as defined by the regulatory body.
The Staff Nurse will adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi and UAE.
- Assessment and Diagnosis:
Collects and analyzes assessment data to determine diagnosis or issues, including physical, psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs. Uses evidence‑based assessment techniques, validates the diagnosis with the patient, family and health‑care team, prioritizes data based on immediate condition, identifies potential risks, and documents information in compliance with established guidelines. - Planning and Outcomes Identification:
Identifies expected outcomes and develops a plan to address health promotion, health restoration and health maintenance. Involves patient, family and health‑care team in formulating a culturally appropriate individualised plan of care, applies evidence‑based practices, modifies the plan according to ongoing assessment, and documents measurable goals using standardised language. - Implementation and Coordination of Care Delivery:
Implements the plan of care with the patient, family and health‑care team, performs treatments and procedures according to protocols, administers medications per policies, documents all components, communicates relevant information across all levels, and demonstrates knowledge of cost‑effective resource consumption. - Health Teaching and Health Promotion:
Utilises teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s condition and learning needs, promotes healthy lifestyles and self‑management, seeks feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies, and documents health education in the patient’s record. - Evaluation:
Evaluates progress toward outcomes, assesses patient/family understanding, uses ongoing data to adjust diagnoses and plans, involves patient, family and team in evaluation, provides comprehensive handover, attends care rounds and updates providers on changes, and documents reassessment and rationale for revisions. - Evidence‑based Practice and Research:
Integrates evidence and research findings into practice, participates in evidence‑based and research activities appropriate to the nurse’s level, shares findings with the team, and participates in performance improvement projects to enhance clinical practice. - Leadership:
Demonstrates leadership behaviours across the profession and community, serves as a role model promoting a positive, team‑based, organised and safe work environment, coordinates delegated activities, supervises nurses and students, demonstrates critical thinking and decision‑making, pursues informal and formal leadership opportunities, participates actively in shared decision‑making, and supervises practical nurses and junior staff to ensure safe and effective care.
- Applies principles of professional codes of ethics that ensure individual rights in all areas of practice.
- Maintains a professional and therapeutic nurse‑patient relationship and serves as a patient advocate assisting patients and families in developing self‑advocacy skills.
- Speaks up to question healthcare practices as appropriate for safety and quality improvement.
- Discloses any observed illegal or incompetent practices and decisions made by potentially impaired health‑care staff per organizational policy.
- Evaluates own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards, guidelines, rules and regulations.
- Considers factors related to effectiveness, cost, environmental health and impact on practice and organization.
- Utilises current resources related to standards of care, policies and procedures and patient needs.
