Responsibilities
- Assist Drs in insertion of invasive lines following sterile technique as per infection control guidelines.
- Assess and document vital signs at specified frequencies according to patient condition and hospital policy.
- Set up ventilator and provide care for patients on ventilator/respiratory support.
- Assist in transferring a patient on respiratory support.
- Coordinate with doctors and allied workers to provide comprehensive care to the patient.
- Be competent in code blue and respond when needed.
- Perform nursing procedures with attention to accuracy, patient safety and comfort, including those requiring strict aseptic technique.
- Provide patient education to patient and family members and document.
- Provide for the physical, psychological, and social needs of the patient and families.
- Assist and encourage patient with breastfeeding when applicable.
- Assist with transfer of critical patients to other facilities and serve as transport nurse during ambulance transport.
- Collect specimens, blood for diagnostic testing and monitor critical values.
- Order blood products and monitor patients when receiving blood products.
- Have in‑depth knowledge of obstetric emergencies, nursing management and care as per protocols.
- Provide surgical care (pre‑ and post‑operative), postnatal care, breastfeeding advice and support to women and their babies.
- Perform initial and reassessment of patients in the department including neonates, pediatric and adult patients.
- Demonstrate knowledge of electronic fetal monitoring using CTG and central monitoring system.
- Provide high standard of care to all specialties within the hospital scope of practice.
- Initiate intravenous therapy as per doctor orders.
- Demonstrate skills in routine care for newborns, rooming in with mothers.
- Participate in emergency code drills and perform when necessary.
- Act as team leader in the absence of the charge nurse and delegate tasks as per skills and scope of practice.
- Demonstrate knowledge in caring for patients admitted for induction of labor.
- Monitor early progress of laboring mothers before transferring to labor ward, interpret fetal heart rate and notify physician when appropriate.
- Perform post‑partum care of mother, perform fundal massage, monitor vital signs, blood loss and promote newborn/parent bonding.
- Perform thorough medication review before preparing and administering medications.
- Coordinate with obstetrician, neonatologist/pediatrician and other allied workers to provide comprehensive care to patients.
- Prepare mothers for cesarean sections and provide pre‑ and post‑operative care to patients requiring surgical procedures.
- Promote and assist mothers with breastfeeding, basic newborn care and patient education.
- Provide appropriate health education to patients and their families.
- Hold an appropriate license to work as a nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all required qualifications and experience.
- Manage own professional revalidation.
