District 3 covers 13 locations including Purcell, Shawnee, Chandler, Okfuskee, Hughes, Coal, Johnston, Pontotoc, Seminole, Pottawatomie, Garvin, McClain and Cleveland counties - Job Family:
Operating power equipment and performing maintenance and repair of highways - Pre-employment requirements: background check, drug screening, physical abilities test, valid Oklahoma driver’s license; CDL may be required for some agencies
- Operate heavy machinery such as trucks, graders, dozers, loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, snow removal equipment
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities
- Repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks
- Repair and/or replace signs, posts, guardrails and fences
- Provide traffic control assistance using stop/slow signs or flags
- Apply herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds
- Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items and obstacles
Level II: Skilled work at full performance level in operating heavy equipment for highway construction or repair; performs routine highway maintenance duties.
Level I: Basic level; works under close supervision operating and maintaining power equipment and performs related unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks.
Education and ExperienceLevel II: One year of experience operating heavy equipment.
Level I: No educational or experience requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies- Level II: Knowledge of operation and servicing of heavy equipment; materials used in highway construction; proper traffic control; ability to operate equipment, use materials, follow instructions, and communicate effectively.
- Level I: Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of power equipment; ability to perform manual labor, maintain equipment, and follow instructions.
- Valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of employment; commercial driver’s license (class A or
B) may be required by some agencies. - Commercial driver’s license, class A, required within five months for ODOT or Turnpike Authority appointments.
- ODOT personnel must obtain CDL tank vehicle endorsement.
- Drug test required prior to appointment.
- Willingness to perform job‑related travel, work irregular hours during emergencies, and have a phone for on‑call duty.
- Physical demands: stand, walk, reach, talk, hear; sit; manipulate tools; climb, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; regularly lift 80 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds; visual acuity: close, distance, peripheral, depth.
- Some positions may be deemed safety‑sensitive.
