The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and is responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of veterinary medicines in the UK.

We have a vacancy for an AMR Surveillance Manager

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) leads governmental decision-making for AMR in animals in England. The VMD has a dedicated AMR Surveillance & Evidence team to ensure we understand, detect, and respond to AMR risks effectively, and make evidence-based policy decisions.

This exciting and interesting job puts you at the heart of the AMR Surveillance & Evidence (S &

E) team, which is part of the wider AMR Team. The role involves significant coordination and engagement with delivery partners, government departments, and external stakeholders.

As AMR Surveillance Manager, you will be responsible for managing our AMR surveillance programmes, ensuring their scientific robustness, value for money, and alignment with evolving policy needs. You will lead the delivery, governance, and continuous development of these programmes. You will also ensure that surveillance outputs are clearly and accurately communicated, particularly in the VMD’s flagship publication, the annual UK Veterinary Antibiotic Resistance and Sales Surveillance (UK VARSS) report.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Degree-level qualification in the biological sciences, or equivalent experience.

We’re looking for you to have:
  • Experience working in microbiology in a relevant area, such as antimicrobial resistance, animal health, or public health.
  • Experience managing projects and delivering in partnership.
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate scientific concepts to a non-specialist audience.
We’re looking for someone that:
  • Is proficient in the use of Microsoft Office 365 packages, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook.
