Location: ARL Maryland - Adelphi, MD 20783 US (Primary)

Job Description:

Provide hands‑on research and engineering support to ARL’s Electromagnetic Effects Branch within the EMSS Division for materials development, additive manufacturing, and testing activities related to advanced sensor and microsystems engineering. The Materials Engineer (Student) supports Army R&D in additive manufacturing and materials science for micro- and macro‑scale applications. Responsibilities include designing, fabricating, and characterizing advanced materials and components; supporting research on novel composites, MEMS structures, and energy‑related materials;

and assisting with data collection, laboratory operation, and test documentation. The position contributes directly to ongoing R&D under the Electromagnetic Effects Branch, working closely with mechanical and electrical engineers and materials scientists to prototype, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods and materials performance.

ESSENTIAL

JOB DUTIES:
  • Assist with modeling and fabrication of additive‑manufactured components and experimental devices.
  • Conduct laboratory testing and collect data for material properties and performance validation.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment including deposition, printing, and characterization systems.
  • Document experimental results and prepare technical summaries and presentation materials.
  • Support process improvement efforts, laboratory organization, and safety compliance.
  • Collaborate with ARL researchers to transition concepts to validated prototypes.
Job Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge of materials science, additive manufacturing, and microfabrication processes.
  • Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, safety protocols, and data analysis tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and presentation of technical results.
  • Experience with CAD, finite‑element analysis, or materials characterization tools preferred.
  • Laboratory experience or coursework in materials engineering, additive manufacturing, or microfabrication.
